Publication overview

When the audience helped shape the message

HEART treated young people as contributors, not only recipients. Research and youth input informed communication that travelled through television, radio, posters, schools, buses, songs and music videos.

The publication explores why audience insight came before the creative, how each channel performed a specific role, and how baseline and follow-up surveys connected campaign exposure with recall, knowledge, attitudes and reported protective behaviours.

What the publication explores

  • How research and youth input shaped the creative before launch
  • Why television, radio, posters, schools, buses and music formed one message ecosystem
  • How local language and rural adaptation supported relevance beyond Lusaka
  • What baseline and follow-up surveys measured—and why association should not be mistaken for sole causation
  • What modern communicators can learn about co-creation, channel purpose, sensitivity and campaign evaluation

Historical interpretation: This is an independent Adnnovate publication. It is not endorsed by or affiliated with HEART’s historical agencies, broadcasters, research partners or public-health organisations. Visuals are Adnnovate-created historical reconstructions informed by public records and campaign-era communication methods; they should not be treated as original HEART archive assets unless specifically labelled as archival material.

Evidence note: Reported evaluation findings describe associations between campaign exposure and selected knowledge, attitudes or reported protective behaviours. They do not establish that HEART alone caused every observed change.
